Nov 3, 2010: Our Friend Tom DiNapoli Elected as NYS Comptroller

td Tom DiNapoli was elected state Comptroller Tuesday, with strong support from CSEA. This election is a victory for working families, as DiNapoli will fight hard to protect our pensions against corporate interests that would jeopardize them.
DiNapoli won by three percentage points—despite opponent Harry Wilson's financial advantage and endorsements from all three major New York City newspapers: The New York Times, The Daily News, and the New York Post.
It was a hard fought campaign, but DiNapoli's name recognition and labor backing proved stronger than Wilson's accolades.

Tom DiNapoli is against using our pension
funds for any purpose other than to pay retirement benefits for retired NY and local government public employees.

Your vote for Tom DiNapoli on Election Day will guarantee that your pension is not put at risk.
Tom's mom was a CSEA member working for NY State and Tom's dad was a CWA union member working for the phone company.  Tom knows the value of union benefits and the importance of our current NYS pension system.  CSEA and other unions lobbied and worked many years to establish the NYS pension system.

Today, even as many other public pensions are facing funding crises, New York's pension fund is fully funded and was lauded in the August 2010 issue of Governing Magazine as "the nationwide pension leader".

The NYS pension system is among a small number of other states that have a fully funded pension system because Comptrollers like Tom DiNapoli would not allow raiding the pension funds for other purposes.  The NYS Retirement System is a Defined Pension Plan that is currently available to only about 1 in 4 U.S. workers.

CSEA President Danny Donohue says  “As we prepare to begin our second century we have total confidence that Tom DiNapoli will maintain the traditions of New York’s best comptrollers, while leading the system forward to meet the needs of today and tomorrow.”
Donohue pointed out that another important factor in CSEA’s decision to back DiNapoli is the unwavering support for him from CSEA members who work in the Comptroller’s office.  “It speaks volumes about Tom as an individual and a manager that the people who know him best are urging this endorsement,” Donohue said.
