Gov. George
Pataki signs the Worksite Security Act;
Historic Measure Will Improve Security and Protect People
New York State will lead the nation in public work site security as a result
of Gov. George Pataki's approval of the Worksite Security Act. The
legislation, a comprehensive measure requiring the assessment of risks
and appropriate measures to reduce them, will improve security and
protect people. CSEA led the fight to enact the legislation through a
statewide media campaign and grassroots member efforts.
The union
praised state legislative leaders Sen. Majority Leader Joseph Bruno
and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and legislation sponsors State
Sen. Nicholas Spano and Assemblywoman Susan John for their strong
support and hard work to pass the law. "CSEA believes this
legislation is a common sense approach to a challenging situation and
Governor Pataki has demonstrated good sense by signing it into
law," said CSEA President Danny Donohue. "Assessing and
reducing risks in public worksites will not only benefit the people
who work in those locations, it will benefit all the people of New
York in many ways. The governor's approval will also make New York the
national leader in this area as we should be."
The Law takes effect March 2007 (270 days after
signing)
