Having a union and the right to bargain
collectively with your employer is not an old-fashioned idea. Top
executives of every major corporation negotiate their own
compensation, retirement and severance packages with the companies
for which they work.

Apr 6, 2012: County
Web Site Hack Due to Layoff of Security Chiefpdf
version
"In response to questions from legislators, Bierne acknowledged
that the county’s computer security officer was laid off as part
of the reduction of 40 staff members from the IT department since
2010. His backup also left his job with the county, so the current
security officer is relatively new on the job, she said."
Dark
Deal Includes Outrageous Political Boondoggle A new email campaign by CSEA for the above disgrace:
FILL IN YOUR ZIP CODE AND STREET NAME to connect to your state
representatives to urge them to repeal this political giveaway! The
link is below to do this Tell Your State Legislators: Stop
the Giveaway! Governor Cuomo, State Senators and Assembly members voted
for a retirement perk worth thousands of dollars for themselves and
their political appointees at your expense. Under Tier 6, taxpayers
are on the hook for paying for an 8 percent of salary retirement
perk for politicians and their appointees every year! These
politically favored few will be allowed to skip out overnight,
taking thousands of taxpayer dollars after just one year of service. Send
your Senator and Assembly member a message.
Tell them to repeal this giveaway to the politically connected and
restore fairness to the state pension fund!

Think Again:
Middle Class Union Workers Taking Back Ohio
We've all seen coverage of the astounding
defeat of extreme anti-worker Senate Bill 5 in Ohio.
Working families in The Buckeye State of Ohio made history by
telling greedy politicians to back down. Here's the story from
the people who brought victory to Ohio from AFSCME.
We would not be celebrating this win if it
weren’t for the tireless efforts of your AFSCME sisters and
brothers in Ohio. The Main Street movement that started in Madison,
landed in Ohio, and is now sweeping the country should send shivers
down the spines of anti-worker politicians in cities and towns and
statehouses across America. The people who work on Main Street —
who plow our roads, tend to the sick and protect our communities —
will not allow themselves to be scapegoats for the economic crisis
created by Wall Street
greed. This victory confirms what we have always known:
Working families will rise up, organize, and make our voices heard
when lawmakers trample our rights in order to cushion millionaires
and corporations.

What
it means to have a union; a perspective from the West coast of the
US:
To be a union member is to be a "caretaker of a great
inheritance," .... "We're lucky we've had people come
before us who built something out of nothing. We're watching over
what someone else built and keeping it strong so we can pass it on
to our kids." "When 100 people are pulling on
that rope, it's easier than with 10 people." StoryStory

Comment
made in Summer of 2010 becomes true in Autumn of 2010: (from
one of our CSEA member co-workers):
I have been paying property taxes since
1976. My taxes go up every year (they tell you that at the
assessor’s office).
My Fire District, Town and school taxes are all higher than the
county tax.
My school taxes are 3 times the amount of my county tax. I have no
children in school.
My county tax for 2010 was 4.5% higher than my county tax for 2009.
That’s $56.00 or approximately $1.00 per week.
I cringe at the thought of someone (including myself) being laid off
so I can save a dollar a week.
I am sure people with more property pay more but I doubt I make
anything close to what they make.
I just wanted to add my 2 cents. Thank you.
